Directions to Conwy Beekeepers’ apiary: Tal y Cafn apiary
- See our Programme of meetings for 2019 dates
-
Our training apiary is in the old Llwydfaen Quarry at Tal y Cafn, Conwy Valley.
-
We lease the quarry from Bodnant Estate.
-
The quarry is on the site of a 12th century motte and bailey. Click here for information.
-
Roadside parking for about 20 cars.
-
No toilets on site.
-
No equipment or tools stored on site.
-
We meet on Saturday or Sunday afternoons, 2.30pm to about 4.30pm about every four weeks, April to September.
-
We welcome newcomers, who are just thinking about becoming beekeepers, as well as new beekeepers and improvers.
-
Friends and family are welcome, age 10 years and upwards.
-
We also have one winter meeting in early January, to control varroa mites.
-
The apiary is stocked with a variety of hives: National timber and polystyrene, WBC and Rose one size box.
-
The bees are inspected annually by our Seasonal Bee Inspector.
-
The site is very sheltered and ideal for training purposes.
-
We can provide good quality bee suits and gloves for newcomers, children’s sizes up to XL. Just bring wellies.
-
We emphasize the importance of personal safety when working with bees. Everybody present is expected to wear clean appropriate protective clothing.
-
We usually have 20 to 30 trainees at meetings, with three instructors, and we split into small groups.
-
We have a pool of about six instructors. Would you like to join the pool?
-
The training sessions are informal, and we encourage trainees to handle combs of bees.
-
We always welcome offers of help with gardening.
