American Foul Brood

We regret to report that American Foul Brood (AFB) has been found in two hives of bees in two apiaries in St. Asaph belonging to one beekeeper. Both colonies have been destroyed by burning by Seasonal Bee Inspector David Hards.

If you have bees within 10km of St. Asaph, please contact the association secretary on 01492 650851 to arrange an urgent inspection.

AFB is the most virulent of all the bee diseases. North West Wales has a very good record of keeping AFB away, with only a handful of isolated cases in our area in the last 30 years. Other parts of the UK have outbreaks more or less regularly. Moving bees into our clean area is a surefire way to spread AFB.

We encourage all members to register on BeeBase (http://www.nationalbeeunit.com/)
See https://secure.fera.defra.gov.uk/beebase/downloadDocument.cfm?id=7 for info on AFB.

The course at Henfaes is now filling up.

Ghost bees

If you see white honeybees flying into your hives, don’t worry. They will have been working the Himalayan balsam, which flowers from early July until the first frosts. They come home covered in white pollen. Balsam is now the main late source of pollen and nectar in low-lying areas near streams and rivers, and a good honey producer.

Swarms

swarm, june 2011The bees are still swarming. Late season swarms can be flighty and difficult to entice to stay in a hive. These pictures show swarms I’ve tried to catch recently. Alas, both swarms flew away.

hiving swarm, june 2011The June swarm shown entering a hive might have stayed if I had put a comb of sealed brood in the hive as an attractant.
swarm, july 2011The July swarm was about to be dislodged from a tree into a skep with my NHS walking stick (soon to be discarded).
catching swarm, july 2011It flew away from the skep before I could hive it.
Happy beekeeping.
